The National Youth Council on Sunday evening showcased young upcoming Saint Lucian talent at the National Cultural Centre as part of the Nobel Laureate Week 2014 celebrations.

Although the event was poorly attended, the production which included both visual and theatrical art displays, was well put together. The theme for the night was “A Night of Arts for Peace.”

The show started with two productions – “Boat” and “Interconnectivity of It All”.

Other highlights included a dramatic piece called “After the Trough” by a group of actors who incorporated excerpts from Sir Arthur Lewis’s “The Agony of The Eight” into their presentation.

The actors were said to have done justice to this piece with every part done to perfection.

Following this, the audience was treated to a showing of videos featuring Sir Derek Walcott reading excerpts from his book, “Omeros”. The Laborie Steel Pan Orchestra then performed two items of music, including Bob Marley’s “One Love”.

Pearl Tench proved to be a talented cello player as she serenaded the audience with two renditions to the delight of the appreciative audience.

The next production “Bord de la Mer” took the audience to the sea. It featured a young woman with an interest in the works of Derek Walcott as she tried to increase her knowledge of him by asking an adult in the community questions on the Nobel laureate’s earlier publications such as “Ti Jean and His Brothers”, “A City’s Death By Fire”, and “Omeros”.

The School of Music String Ensemble entertained the crowd with their musical talents, followed by “Photo Dancers” dancing while holding up local paintings depicting flashes of Saint Lucia’s past. Vladimir Lucien read a passage from Derek Walcott’s “Omeros”. This was followed by an instrumental musical duet.

The curtains came down on the day’s performances with a “Words and Messages to The People”.
