After a relatively quiet first four months of the year, the Saint Lucia Boxing Association is preparing for a very busy period.
The association has shortlisted a number of boxers for a series of upcoming regional and international engagements.
These include the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Championships, Pan American Games qualifiers, Creole Championships, Caribbean Championships, Commonwealth Youth Games and American Boxing Confederation (AMBC) Championships.
A six-member team along with three officials will travel to the OECS Championships in Grenada at month-end. Saint Lucia are defending champions, having won at home in 2013. The team for Grenada will be announced this week.
Elite boxers Lyndell ‘the Russian’ Marcellin and Arthur Langelier are scheduled to participate in the Pan Am qualifiers in Mexico next month.
The Creole Championships will be held in Martinique in early July. Saint Lucia finished in second place last year in Guadeloupe, losing out on the title by one point to French Guyana.
Boxers in the Novice, Junior, Youth, Elite and Women’s divisions are expected to take part in the Caribbean Championships in Aruba in late September.
For September’s Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa, Saint Lucia will be represented by 64kg light-welterweight Adrian Brad Louis, a multitalented youngster from Gros Islet Secondary.
As for the AMBC continental championships towards the World Championships in Doha Qatar in October, the local association is yet to decide on whether it will be participating.
On the local front a series of road shows has been scheduled to fine-tune the boxers’ preparation and readiness for the aforementioned events.
Road shows have been planned for Mabouya Valley,Soufriere, Choiseul and Vieux Fort.
