UWP questions government’s purchase of “overpriced property” for gov’t offices

While the Government of Saint Lucia laments the lack of funds available to finance capital projects to absorb the thousands who are unemployed, the United Workers Party (UWP) has learnt that Cabinet approved the purchase of a dwelling house on the Millennium Highway to the tune of five million dollars ($5,000,000.00).

This particular property has been on the market for some time and the previous UWP administration was approached to purchase the property for far less than the price paid by the SLP Administration. It is believed that the newly purchased property houses Social Agencies such as the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF).

The United Workers Party is baffled by the recent acquisition. This is yet another example which shows that this Labour Administration has no clue about how to lead this country nor how to manage the fiscal and economic affairs of Saint Lucia. While many families are reeling from the adverse effects of the Valued Added Tax (VAT), the Government of Saint Lucia continues to show lack of empathy and poor judgment in its policy decisions. The prime minister is doing nothing to prevent this country from falling off an economic precipice.

The acquisition further reminds us of government’s intention to renovate the old Golden Hope building to house the Office of the Prime Minister. This reinforces our concern that this prime minister is more concerned about making himself more comfortable in government instead of heeding the cries of Saint Lucians.
