Not all at the same time, mind you.

Leston Lawrence was sentenced to 30 months in prison on Thursday for theft, breach of trust and money laundering.

He will serve an additional 30 months if he doesn’t pay $145,000 in restitution within three years.

The sentencing judge, aptly named Peter Doody, told the court prison time was needed to deter others from attempting similar crimes, according to the Canadian Press.

The post INTERNATIONAL: Nun says Mary likely was not a virgin appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

170202-nun-virgin-mary-comments-featureNEW YORK POST – A nun in Spain has received death threats from angry Catholics after suggesting that Mary likely had sex with husband Joseph – much like any “normal couple” would.

Sister Lucia Caram – a self-described “restless and disturbing” nun on her Twitter profile that boasts more than 183,000 followers – seemingly contradicted Roman Catholic faith by suggesting that the Virgin Mary might not have been celibate after all during a television appearance in Spain on Sunday.

“I think Mary was in love with Joseph and that they were a normal couple – and having sex is a normal thing,” Caram told the Chester in Love Show, according to the Guardian. “It’s hard to believe and hard to take in. We’ve ended up with the rules we’ve invented without getting to the true message.”

Caram, who lives in a convent in Catalonia, said the church has long held a “poor attitude” on the subject and has “swept it under the carpet,” according to the Guardian.

“It wasn’t a taboo subject; it was more something that was considered dirty or hidden,” Caram said. “It was the denial of what I believe to be a blessing.”

The post Health City Cayman Islands: A Caribbean hub for sports medicine? appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

capture-20170205-000719PRESS RELEASE – Health City Cayman Islands may be the go-to Caribbean hospital for Turks and Caicos Islanders needing to treat sports-related injuries, according to a recent beneficiary of treatment at the state-of-the-art medical facility.

Judith Robinson, Director of Sports for the Government of Turks and Caicos Islands, shared this assessment along with a glowing recommendation of Health City after being a patient there herself.

Robinson was in a vehicle accident in April 2016 that left her with torn tendons in her right shoulder, requiring surgery to repair her rotator cuff. Her doctor referred her to Health City Cayman Islands.

“Judith Robinson was not able to lift her arm … she had a full thickness rotator cuff tear
which required an arthroscopic procedure,” recalled Dr. Niranjan Nagaraja, Senior Orthopedic Surgeon at Health City Cayman Islands. Dr. Nagaraja said his patient was able to move her arm immediately after the minimally invasive surgery and make preparations for her return travel.

For her part, Robinson was pleased with her decision to make the trip and with the treatment and care she received throughout the entire process. From prior to her arrival to her recovery and discharge she experienced an exceptional level of professionalism from everyone involved in her case, including the junior as well as the highest-level staff.

“Of course I will be encouraging our government to come and see for themselves the type of facilities here. Who knows? We might end up having one just like this in Turks and Caicos,” Robinson said.

A Home Away from Home

Robinson, who describes herself as someone who doesn’t like hospitals, says Health City felt like “a home away from home”. Her daughter Jewel Ewing, who accompanied her on the trip, said it doesn’t even seem like a hospital due to its warm, attractive and engaging appearance and environment.

Both Robinson and her daughter were effusive in their praise for the team at Health City. “The doctors here are very friendly. The staff are very friendly. The food here is delicious. I had a very good time here,” Ewing said.

“Since we got here, we had a caregiver. She was always in contact with me so I didn’t feel like I was always in the dark. She updated me on what was happening, what procedures my mom was getting, making sure that I was taken care of, making sure that everything went smoothly.”

“I would definitely recommend this hospital to others because of the level of professionalism that the staff have displayed and continue to display,” Robinson said.

Health City Cayman Islands, which opened its doors in February 2014, embodies the vision and mission of its founder, Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, to make quality healthcare affordable and accessible to all in need.

The hospital covers the gamut of medical services, from pediatrics and radiology to a range of surgical fields, including cardiac surgery and neurosurgery.

“We can, I can” Reduce My Risk of Cancer

The post “We can, I can” Reduce My Risk of Cancer appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

cancerPRESS RELEASE – The large number of deaths from breast and cervical cancer in the Caribbean is very alarming, since cervical cancer is largely preventable, and breast cancer can be detected early and treated successfully.

Executive Director, Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), Dr C. James Hospedales said, “Common modifiable risk factors that contribute to the development of cancers include tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol.”

He also stated that, “There is strong evidence that a person’s risk of developing cancer can be substantially reduced through healthy lifestyles. A reduction in modifiable risk factors will contribute to a decrease in cancer cases, and as a consequence, deaths and costs from the disease in our Region.”

This year, and through 2018, the theme for World Cancer Day (WCD) is “We can. I can” focusing on how everyone – collectively and individually – can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer. The 3-year campaign which started in 2016, outlines actions that communities and individuals can take to save lives by achieving greater equity in cancer care and making fighting cancer a priority at the highest political levels.

Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the Caribbean, where rates of death from cervical cancer, breast, prostate and colon cancer are 2 to 9 times higher compared to the United States.

Dr Hospedales said “Cervical cancer is perhaps the most preventable, yet a recent study by CARPHA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that 16 of the 18 countries for which data were reported, cervical cancer accounted for 4.5%–18.2% of cancer deaths.”

CARPHA encourages persons to adopt healthier lifestyles to prevent cancer. Here is what you can do now to reduce your risk of cancer:

· avoid the use of tobacco

· limit alcohol use

· keep a healthy weight

· get sufficient physical activity

· increase daily intake of fruits and vegetables to 5 or more servings per day

· participation in screening programmes is strongly encouraged for prevention of cervical cancer and early detection of breast, colon and rectum cancer

· get vaccinated against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Hepatitis B

So, on World Cancer Day, are you acting responsibly to prevent cancer?

“We can”, collectively, inspire action, create healthy environments, build a quality workforce and shape policy changes for cancer prevention. As an individual “I can” understand that early detection saves lives. I can support others, and I can make healthy lifestyle choices.

Act NOW to prevent cancer! We can…I can!

The teenage suspect – known only by his nickname ‘Frijolito’ – was held in the city of Cali in the South American country.

Police describe him as a “highly dangerous criminal” and said he was caught after a four-month manhunt.

Cali Police Chief Hugo Casas said: “He is only 17 years old and has committed more than 30 homicides.

“He is really a dangerous person, it was good to get him and let’s say the city is free of a person who could continue doing these deeds outside authority.”

Officers claim ‘Frijolito’ – which means ‘Little Bean’ – started killing people at around the age of 12.

They allege he was head of a gang of drug traffickers and assassins who ruthlessly terrorised the city in the south of the country.

It is believed that Frijolito’s last criminal act was a double murder at a shopping centre.

The teen is being held at a juvenile detention centre until he turns 18 when he will be moved to an adult prison.

The post VF community gets chance to question government on Pearl of the Caribbean appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

unnamedPRESS RELEASE – Members of the community of Vieux Fort got the opportunity to put questions to Government and Invest Saint Lucia during a Town Hall Meeting held at the Vieux Fort Primary School on Wednesday evening.

The exercise is part of an ongoing drive by Government to share information and engage the community about the “Pearl of the Caribbean”, a fully integrated development earmarked for Vieux Fort. The project is proposed by master developer Desert Star Holdings under the guidance of Teo Ah Khing of the TAK Group in conjunction with the Government of Saint Lucia.

The meeting started with a welcome by Vieux Fort Town Council Mayor Orricia Denbow-Bullen, following which Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Commerce, Industry, Investment, Enterprise Development and Consumer Affairs Honourable Bradley Felix delivered opening remarks.

Minister Felix shared with the public that the agreement with Desert Star Holdings for the Pearl of the Caribbean was still very much an ongoing exercise.

unnamed-1

Said Minister Felix: “There were concerns after going through the details.

We did a walk through at the Mangroves site and we had some concerns as the Mangrove was too much of a delicate area for the community of Vieux Fort and vital to our eco-system. We also recognized the reef which was also going to be affected and so we decided we had to renegotiate. We looked at alternative sites and went into another framework agreement. As a Cabinet of Ministers it is not a situation where the Prime Minister says something and everyone agrees. There is extreme debate. There is extreme consultation.”

The Minister noted that with a project of this size concerns from the public are anticipated and welcomed.

“For whatever reason the incorrect information has been spread out there and that is the unfortunate thing; people are out there spreading misinformation. So we have begun our consultations  . . . and we felt it necessary to bring people from various competencies to answer the questions.”

The hall was packed to capacity as presentations on the project were delivered by the team from Invest Saint Lucia which included CEO McHale Andrew, Corporate Secretary/Legal Counsel Seryozha Cenac and Corporate Communications Officer Dainea Augier followed by a presentation from Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Auria King-Cenac.

CEO of Invest Saint Lucia McHale Andrew in his opening remarks noted that Saint Lucia was a country at a crossroads.

“We are struggling economically. Our development and that of most other countries in the Caribbean were based on three things. One, generous inflows of aid from developed countries; Two, access to concessional funding and aid for most of the capital projects that we would have undertaken and the third one is one way preferential access to developed country markets for our exports. What that resulted in was that we were able to attract investors trying to avail themselves of the opportunity to sell in those developed country markets without competition.”

The CEO reminded the members of the community of the many factories which used to employ persons in the community in the past.

“Very few of those factories are still alive today and we now have to earn our way to prosperity,” he noted. “We will get into the details of the DSH agreement and we will be able to debate and answer your concerns and also provide you with the facts.”

The team from Invest Saint Lucia further explained to the gathering that the development is expected to be carried out in 25 phases over a period of 20-25 years. The only part of the project which is nearing approval stages is the racetrack at Beausejour pending an Environmental Impact Assessment.

Phase One will include specifically: Grandstand, International Race Track, Polo Field, Equestrian Lawn, Receiving Barn, Equine Clinic & Quarantine Barn, Infield Park, Fractional Ownership Homestead Villa, Domestic Barns, International Barns and the Race Course Boulevard.

The Invest Saint Lucia team listed the benefits of the project and also shared the associated risks.

Among the benefits are:

  • Stimulation of the economy
  • Employment generation across various sectors
  • Improvement in the overall standard of living
  • Training component: on proper care of equine facilities and equine veterinary health;
  • Trade benefits: expansion of new and existing channels of trade – importing and exporting goods
  • Supplementary businesses opening up for a wide range of novelty goods and services across a spectrum of fields
  • Beautification of existing landscape
  • Job opportunities : about three jobs per horse for the horse care alone
  • Development of Vieux Fort: productive use of underutilised strategic lands in Beausejour
  • Creation of new ancillary services
  • Creation of construction and construction related services
  • Boost in the agricultural sector (creation of new and expansion of existing farms)

Some of the associated risks noted by Invest Saint Lucia were the environmental which will be determined by an EIA and pressure on infrastructural utilities. Invest Saint Lucia noted at the meeting that ISL and DSH met with the various utilities and service providers and based on information received, any concern relating to the inadequacy of such utilities and services were allayed.

Following the presentations the audience was invited to ask questions of the panel.

The Government continues its ongoing engagement exercises next week meeting with the business community and Vieux Fort youth.

Saint Lucia’s business district – Castries.

The World Bank’s Doing Business Ranking 2017 report has been released, but it’s not all good news for Saint Lucia.

The island has dropped in the global rankings from 78 to 86, out of 190 countries.

New Zealand has taken over the number one spot from Singapore, which is now second, followed by Denmark.

According to the report, Saint Lucia has dropped in all categories, with the main contributing category being “Getting Electricity”, which has slid from 29 to 56.

Getting Credit (157), Resolving Insolvency (114) and Registering Property (104) are the three categories in which Saint Lucia continue to rank over 100. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO

The good news for Saint Lucia is that it recorded the second best ranking in the English-speaking Caribbean behind Jamaica (67). Trinidad and Tobago is third with 96.

St. Lucia ranked number one in the region from 2007 to 2014.

Meanwhile, it was not a good look for the Eastern Caribbean.

With the exception of Saint Lucia, all the other eastern islands ranked over 100: Dominica (101), Antigua and Barbuda (113), Barbados (117), St. Vincent and the Grenadines (125), St. Kitts and Nevis (134) and Grenada (138).

Mexico topped the Latin America and Caribbean region with 47 followed by Colombia (53), Peru (54), Puerto Rico, US (55) and Costa Rica (62).

Jamaica, the best ranked in the English-speaking Caribbean and CARICOM, is sixth overall in Latin America and the Caribbean. The other CARICOM countries are The Bahamas (121), Guyana (124), Suriname (158), and Haiti (181).

According to the World Bank, “Economies are ranked on their ease of doing business, from 1–190. A high ease of doing business ranking means the regulatory environment is more conducive to the starting and operation of a local firm. The rankings are determined by sorting the aggregate distance to frontier scores on 10 topics, each consisting of several indicators, giving equal weight to each topic. The rankings for all economies are benchmarked to June 2016.”

syria-flagANTIGUA OBSERVER – Several Syrian refugees living in Antigua & Barbuda who were anxiously waiting to resettle in the United States have to now wait indefinitely following the recent signing of the controversial executive order by US President Donald Trump.

The four refugees who were among over a dozen kept in custody here, have been anticipating their move for nearly a year after they were granted asylum by the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organisation on Migration (IOM).

UNHCR local representative Michael Joseph said however, the stroke of President Trump’s pen reversed the approval as his order not only restricts immigration from seven Muslim countries, but it also suspends all refugee admission for 120 days and specifically bars all Syrian refugees indefinitely.
