lvclothingbinthief9n-1-webNEW YORK DAILY NEWS – It turns out Judith Permar wasn’t trying to help those who are less fortunate — she was stealing from them.

The Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania woman was found dead Monday after she got her arm stuck in a clothing donation bin that had collapsed beneath her. Permar, who broke her arm and wrist, died of a combination of hypothermia and trauma.

It wasn’t immediately clear why Permar was at the drop-off box, but Mount Carmel Township police chief Brian Hollerbush told the Associated Press on Wednesday that the 56-year-old was taking bags of clothes out of the bin.

“She was fishing bags out and the ladder she was standing on gave way and she couldn’t get her hand loose,” he said.

Hollerbush said bags containing shoes and clothes were found on the ground near the bin and her black Hummer was nearby with the engine still running.

The post VFCCC questioning lack of answers from OPM during Town Hall Meeting appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

townmeetPRESS RELEASE – The Office of the Prime Minister, working in conjunction with the Vieux-Fort South Constituency Council, hosted a TOWN HALL Meeting on the DSH Project on Wednesday, February 01, 2017 at the Vieux-Fort Primary School.

According to our information, “Invest St. Lucia and other stakeholders will be there “to provide an opportunity for persons to ask questions, make suggestions, learn and influence the plans”.

The VFCCCC welcomed this action and thought that would be a real opportunity for Vieux-Fortians and other Saint Lucians to get the “facts” on the project and put to rest any misinformation that was being circulated. It was the expectation that those attending the meeting would be well informed and be convinced about the benefits of this project to Vieux-Fort and the island at large.

As it turned out, the straightforward answers to the questions were not forthcoming and people were left more confused and disappointed with what they heard. For example, the presenters could not explain clearly, fully or convincingly:

  1. Why is the DSH Project being pursued in a segmented manner and will a separate agreement be needed for each segment?
  2. Why is it that the Agreements were signed without the knowledge and approval of Cabinet?
  3. Why is it necessary to convert the National Stadium into a horse shelter?
  4. How will the five-mile buffer zone around the race track work and how will it affect residents?  The disadvantages vastly outweigh the benefits based on the information presented on screen by the representative of the Ministry of Agriculture.
  5. Will the EIA on the racetrack be released for public consumption and comment? Will the findings and conclusion of the EIA be the determining factor as to whether the racetrack stage goes on or not?
  6. Why is it that Cabinet has serious issues with the Buy Back Clause?
  7. What level of employment can be expected from the construction of the racetrack?

It is important to state that not one person asking questions stated categorically that he/she supported the project as is presently.  There were many, many questions and concerns but the responses lacked substance, details, punch and conviction.

The VFCCCC wishes to reiterate that the DSH Project will have enormous, deep-seated and long-term consequences – financial, legal, environmental, and developmental – for Vieux-Fort and the rest of Saint Lucia. The VFCCCC hopes that those presenting the case for the DSH Deal will give clear, complete and factual details to the above and other questions when next they convene a Town Hall Meeting in Vieux-Fort.

The post CARIBBEAN: Dominica PM says a coup was planned against his gov’t appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

roosevelt-skerrit-1JAMAICA OBSERVER – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the leadership of two opposition parties had planned to storm his office and “seize the seat of power” during Tuesday night’s disturbances that led to demonstrators setting fire to buildings and looting several businesses.

In a radio and television address on Wednesday night, Skerrit said that the demonstrators who had been calling for his resignation and that of his government were being pushed by the “militant, irresponsible behaviour of the leadership” of the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) and the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP).

The protesters had earlier during the day staged a demonstration on the street of the Financial Centre where Skerrit’s office is housed, with Opposition Leader Lennox Linton and others defying a police command that their activities be held during the period 11:00 am to 3:00 pm (local time).

“The police had information that the intent of the leadership was to stall the truck in front the Financial Centre and storm the barriers with the intent of entering the building.

“This was the intent of the leadership of the United Workers Party and the Dominica Freedom Party. This is how they intended to seize the seat of power in the country. They would have stormed the Financial Centre Building and seek to occupy the building until their demands were met,” Skerrit said in his broadcast.

The post Flow joins in hailing job Fair Expo ’17 a great success appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

unnamed-11PRESS RELEASE – Hope and optimism are running high among the job seekers who attended last weekend’s Job Fair Expo ‘17, which has been hailed a major success by organisers, sponsors and participants alike.

Hundreds of students and adults seeking employment or even just guidance turned up at the Johnson’s Centre on Saturday, February 4 for the event, which was hosted by AdVizze Consulting Inc. a business development company based in Saint Lucia.

Held under the theme, ‘Bridging the Gap Between Education and Employment’, the aim of the fair was to provide participants with a professional platform, where they could meet company representatives from varied sectors in an informal setting, have face-to-face discussions with them about the recruitment process, and help those companies meet potential employees and promising talents who may be good fits for their business.

Flow was a proud sponsor of the event. Flow Saint Lucia’s Marketing & Communications Executive, Shermalyn Sidonie-John was among the representatives from the company who took the opportunity to meet the job seekers and talk them about Flow and its operations, and to educate them on the telecommunications sector. Some of the students also got the opportunity to sign up for internships with Flow;

“We also provided them with helpful tips on how to improve their job search and land a job by creating impressive resumes and preparing for job interviews. Most of all, what we sought to do was impress upon them the importance of having the right attitude in their quest for employment. We also gave them helpful advice on how to develop perseverance and personal discipline and explained why they must be willing to make sacrifices in order to achieve their dreams,” said Sidonie-John.

AdVizze Consulting Inc. got plenty of positive feedback about the fair, and expressions of gratitude for the well-organised sessions. The agency was pleased and excited about its collaboration with Flow and thanked the company for supporting the event.

170209-shoots-wife-argument-featureNEW YORK POST – An elderly newlywed who told police he had yet to consummate his marriage allegedly shot his wife in the butt for refusing his advances.

Donald Royce, 76, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, admitted to authorities that he shot his wife after an argument about the couple’s sleeping arrangements. Royce told deputies from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office that the couple had been married since August but had yet to solidify their union in the bedroom, WFTX.com reported.

“I shot her and the gun is in my room,” Royce told responding officers.

Royce later claimed he never intended to shoot his 62-year-old wife, saying he just wanted to scare her by shooting the mattress. She was rushed to Lee Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds to the hip and buttocks.

The woman — now back at home recovering from two gunshot wounds — described her living situation as a “nightmare.” She had dated Royce for six years before they decided to get married — but she never thought he was capable of such violence, she told WFTX.com.

Regional response to childhood obesity intensifies

The post Regional response to childhood obesity intensifies appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

gr2_lrgPRESS RELEASE – Childhood obesity continues to be a serious public health concern in the Region.

Statistics show that more than 30% of our Caribbean adolescents are overweight or obese, and risk developing non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases later in life.  The economic burden of diabetes and hypertension alone is estimated at between 1.4% and 8% of GDP in the Caribbean, thus creating a significant drain on Caribbean economies, and threatening development prospects.

Recognising the critical need for leadership and cross sectoral action to address this health issue, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and with funding from CDB hosted a meeting to develop a roadmap to prevent childhood obesity through improved food and nutrition security.

The opening ceremony took place earlier this week at the Barbados Yacht Club, and was marked by the presence of the Barbados Minister of Health, The Honourable John D. E. Boyce and other high level officials from regional institutions.

In his welcome remarks, Dr C. James Hospedales, CARPHA Executive Director said “The meeting will look at how we can together accelerate action on the ground, in countries, in the food environment and nutrition area, especially for the most vulnerable – our children.  The meeting is historic as it gathers at least half of CARICOM Institutions to focus attention on a key development challenge through implementing a 6-point policy package for healthier less obesogenic food environments.”  He went on to say fiscal and trade measures, mandatory nutritional labelling to empower consumers and elimination of trans fats from food supplies are among the areas that must be addressed, buttressed by regionwide and sustained information and communication.

President of the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC), Professor Trevor Hassell, congratulated CARPHA in hosting the meeting and stated that “HCC strongly supports this initiative since the issue at hand, namely childhood obesity and overweight and consequential epidemic of NCDs, present a significant health and development challenge for the people of the Region requiring as it does a multi-sectoral, whole of society response.  This requires active participation and engagement of the public sector, both health and non-health, civil society and the private sector working hand in hand and contributing in their respective areas of expertise and influence.”

Ms Jessie Schutte Aine, PAHO Programme Coordinator for the Caribbean told the gathering   there has been a dramatic rise in the number of children who are overweight or obese in the Region.  She added that childhood obesity is a rapidly growing epidemic, putting children at risk of developing serious health problems including diabetes, heart disease and leading to premature death and disability later in life.  She stated available data indicates that in one generation, the Caribbean has moved from problems of malnutrition and underweight children to the other extreme.   According to Ms Schutt Aine over the last 35 years, there has been a major shift in diet moving away from staple foods that are indigenous to the Region, towards foods that are highly processed.

“NCDs has long been identified as one of the three super priorities for Caribbean Cooperation in Health (CCH)”, stated Dr Rudolph Cummings in his opening remarks.  The Programme Manager for Health Sector Reform at CARICOM stressed the need for a more genuine effort at harnessing the intersectoral energies that are required to make a difference in our NCDs problem and congratulated CARPHA on hosting the meeting.

Through a virtual presentation, CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General for Trade and Economic Integration, Mr. Joseph Cox, also underscored the need for the Region to take decisive action, and   stated that the “timing of this action cannot be overstated and the opportunity to develop a roadmap is welcomed in order to deal with the issue.” Mr Cox explained that a “strategic alliance between the private sector, public sector and civil society is necessary to affect change and move in concert.”

“As a Caribbean Region, we have faltered in our response to the epidemic in childhood obesity with many countries in the Region reporting prevalence rates in excess of 30% in the pre-teen and teenage population.  Collectively, we are well positioned to drive this important element of the health agenda within CARICOM,” stated Honourable John D. E. Boyce, Minister of Health, Barbados in his feature address.

Minister Boyce went on to say there is a need for greater enforcement of the policy of physical education in schools.  He believes that more time should also be allotted for physical education sessions, even during the ‘exam’ term.

In closing the Minister thanked CARPHA for its work in developing appropriate regimes to the childhood obesity epidemic, and its technical support to developing surveillance systems, health promotions strategies, and policies options for addressing childhood obesity.

The Regional High Level Meeting to Develop a Roadmap on Multi-sectoral Action to Prevent Childhood Obesity through Improved Food and Nutrition Security takes place from 9th – 10th February 2017 at the CXC Headquarters.  The focus of the meeting is to foster collaboration between regional economic and social sector institutions to support the implementation of a 6-point policy package developed by CARPHA as part of the Caribbean Cooperation in Health initiative (CCH-IV).
