Officials are investigating a fire that damaged a catholic church in Grand Riviere, Gros Islet in the wee hours of this morning.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Lambert Charles told St. Lucia News Online that officials received a call to respond to the incident about 4:31 a.m. today, March 5. He said three units – two from Gros Islet and one from Castries – responded. An ambulance from Gros Islet was also on the scene.

Charles said the majority of the damage occurred inside the building. Pews and musical equipment were among the items destroyed.

“A cause has not been determined but we have not ruled out foul play,” Charles said.

The estimated cost of the damage has not yet been ascertained. Charles said he has no information whether the building was insured or not.

The building previously housed the Grand Riviere Primary School.
