2017-02-18-19_00_42-man-proposes-with-ring-inside-chicken-nuggets-box-_-new-york-postNY POST – This Illinois woman opened her McDonald’s order to find a nugget that won’t go well with honey mustard.

Karsyn Long is such a fan of the fast food giant that her boyfriend, Kristian Helton, decided to propose with a ring in a box of chicken nuggets.

“She has devoted her life to chicken nuggets, so that had to be part of the engagement. I mean, it was just given,” Helton told news station WAND.

For a proposal fitting of his McDonald’s-obsessed sweetheart, Helton stuck the diamond ring in a chicken nugget and wrote “Will you McMarry me??” inside the box.

She said yes — even though Helton is the first to admit she probably would choose McDonald’s over him.

2017-02-19-09_51_32-gems-of-saint-lucia-press-release-2-17-2017-protected-view-microsoft-word-pPRESS RELEASE – “Gems of Saint Lucia” has successfully collaborated with Motivate Canada, who donated soccer equipment, to assist in the development of soccer in Vieux Fort South, through coach, Mr. Emmanuel Bellas.

This initiative is part of a broader objective, which is aimed at building a strong link between Motivate Canada, Ottawa and Vieux Fort. This initiative was also supported by “Friends of Gems” who contributed generously towards the shipment of the goods from Ottawa to Vieux Fort.

About Gems of Saint Lucia

Gems of Saint Lucia is the new and innovative branding of Saint Lucia’s hospitality and tourism industry, which provides authentic products in a culturally rich environment. These authentic products are rustic in nature. They are charmingly simple or unsophisticated and are owned and controlled by the indigenous people on Saint Lucia, located in the countryside and owned by the countryside people.

The Gem’s philosophy is “Marketing Is Everybody’s Business.” As a result, the goals of the Gems are being achieved through the creation of marketing consulting teams involving Saint Lucians and friends of Saint Lucia. The Gems of Saint Lucia was conceptualized by Wilson Jn. Baptiste, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in 2007. Magdalene Cooman-Maxwell, Chief Operating Officer (COO) joined in 2014.

The Gems of Saint Lucia also believes and practices social responsibility by working with its partners to assist the youth on the island of Saint Lucia. As a result, Gems has engaged these partners in toy drives and soccer clinics, which have created opportunities for children to have an enjoyable Christmas and to effectively utilize the time and energy of the youth of Vieux Fort more efficiently, through soccer.

Mr. Bellas stated: “Reputable entities like GEMS of St. Lucia and MOTIVATE CANADA are well suited to assist the Vieux-Fort South League in achieving some of its objectives which revolve around its motto…SUCCESS THROUGH EMPOWERMENT.

Problem solving benefits:
This soccer initiative will resolve a number of issues faced by the youth of Vieux Fort as they prepare to participate in soccer competitions year after year. Most of these issues are economic in nature as most of the youth involved in soccer may be un-employed and unable to purchase their equipment, which is needed to be an outstanding soccer player. In addition, there will also be less pressure on family incomes which can be re-directed away from soccer to more pressing family needs.2017-02-19-10_03_03-gems-of-saint-lucia-press-release-2-17-2017-microsoft-word-product-activation

The community of Vieux Fort stands to benefit from this initiative as this town will now be pushed to the forefront of the level of consciousness of those who have participated in this initiative. They would like to have answers to questions like: where is this place? why is this place the leader in soccer? and what makes that place work? As a result, they will be motivated to visit and share their stories about this small town on a Gem of an island.

The leaders of Gems of Saint Lucia believe that tourism is about building long term relationships in segments-of-one, and also ensuring that the benefits of tourism flows down to the grassroots on the islands. As a result, social responsibility through partnerships with international organizations and individuals is the corner stone of this concept.

The relationship established with Motivate Canada, through Dan Debau and Gems of Saint Lucia, through Wilson Jn. Baptiste and Magdalene Cooman, is expected to bring about greater awareness to the youth, in both Canada and Vieux Fort, which will usher in more initiatives, beyond soccer.

Gems of Saint Lucia, Motivate Canada and Mr. Emmanuel would like to express their deepest gratitude to all the Friends of Gems who came together to make this initiative work. We are of the firm that these small initiatives have the capacity to impact and transform societies like Vieux Fort. Finally, the Gems concept was designed to bring people together across cultural barriers to bring greater benefits to the greatest number of people.

Mr. Jn. Baptiste and Mr. Bellas were former team mates of Uptown Rebels which was a leading team in Vieux Fort Soccer and also played Caribbean soccer. Mr. Jn. Baptiste was also vice-captain of Saint Lucia’s under 18 Cable and Wireless Youth Soccer team in 1978.

The post Sherwinn Brice winner of the Inaugural Jako Prize appeared first on St. Lucia News Online.

2017-02-19-10_19_38-sherwinnbricewinneroftheinauguraljakoprize-docx-google-docsPRESS RELEASE – Held Sunday February 5, at the tail end of the 2017 Nobel Laureate Festival, the 2nd edition of the Vieux Fort Nobel Laureate Literary Night was an event of high quality that definitely met the goals of the organizers of staging activities in Vieux Fort to match national calendar events that meet and exceed international standards.

The event was officially opened with remarks by the recently appointed mayor of Vieux Fort, The Honorable Orricia Denbow-Bullen. Besides the mayor, the occasion was graced by the presence of such dignitaries as former minister and ambassador, Mr. Cassius Elias; former ambassador and mayor and First Lady of Vieux Fort, Mr. and Mrs. Winall Joshua; and District Reps Mr. Moses Jn Baptiste and Mr. Alva Baptiste.

In terms of performances, songstress and pianist, Shan Lucien, accompanying her singing on keyboards, displayed the exquisite talent that has made her a multiple Youth-Fest award-wining artists. Not to be outdone, songstress, Omega Alexander, thrilled the audience with her signature cover of Sessene Descarte’s “Ė Oui Sa Vwé”, forcing the audience to demand an encore to which she gladly submitted. Arguably, the performances of these two young ladies represented just about the best singing on offer on the island.

Vladimir Lucien’s poetry reading, which brought joy and laughter to the audience, explained why his debut collection of poetry, Sounding Ground, was the winner of the Caribbean’s major literary prize for English literature, the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature, making him the youngest ever winner of the prize, and pronouncing him a rising star in Caribbean literature.

Dressed all in black like a black panther but no way as menacing, teen dancer, Kermani Richard of the MOS Dance Group, gave a lithe, sublime, fluid, poetic dance, that defied bodily limitations, and that left the audience gasping in disbelief. Another teen, steelpan soloist and arranger, Mc. Allister Hunt, unveiled a couple of his recent pan compositions that both entertained and inspired.

Seyans, Vieux Fort’s very own folk choir, enchanted the audience with several folk songs, while the District Rep of Vieux Fort North and former minister of agriculture, Moses “Musa” Jn Baptiste, thrilled the audience with a mixer of poetry, drumming, folk story telling that reminded and educated the audience of authentic folk culture, the way it used to be in the days of no television, internet, and rural electricity, when wakes were truly cultural expressions.

The audience was also thrilled by a quartet of dancehall, hip-hop and reggae artists, including the smooth operator, hiphop artist Oswald “OZ” Montoute; Adrian “Drii Notes” Klien, multiple Caribbean Youthfest award winner, winner of the 2014 National Arts Festival People’s Choice poetry award, and second place winner of the 2013 Word Alive Poetry Festival; Alleyne “Ally Kyatt” Collymore, considered a folk hero, a cult figure, and St. Lucia’s dancehall King, whose lyrics present a compelling brew of creole, comedy, and grass roots culture; and Sylvester “Itoobaa” Peter, the veteran multiple award-wining reggae artist, who entertained with his reggae composition, Do Good in Your Neighborhood, a cogent and timely song, given the recent spate of murders and rapes that is plaguing the country.

Notwithstanding the performances, perhaps the highlight of the evening was the presentation of the inaugural Jako Prize, established by Jako Productions, and awarded to a Vieux Fort artist (author, visual artist, musician, drama, dance, fashion) who has produced the most compelling art during (preferably) the previous year. The nominees for the award included Sherwin Brice (music), Edward Harris (literature), Janice Samuel (visual art), and Imani Models (fashion/performance art).

Sherwinn Brice has continued to pleasantly surprise and impress with a string of compelling songs (accompanied with music videos) culminating in his debut album, 3D. Businessman and writer, Edward Harris, has published over 400 newspaper and magazine articles and his latest book, Winning Strategies for Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, was published in December last year.

Janice Samuel is a string art artist who employs strings and such local woods as mahogany, blue mahaut and laurier cannel to create exquisite and original pieces of art that have won her several M&C fine arts awards. Her latest works include Map of St Lucia, created as a gift for the mayor of Vauclin, Martinique, highlighting the Maria Islets, St. Lucian beaches and Vieux-Fort’s fishing community.

Founded in 1993, and led by Urmain Gray, Imani Models is one of the island’s premiere and longest lasting modeling agencies. The agency both designs and models fashion. Their models have graced the catwalks of fashion shows across the island and were perennial performers at the St. Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival’s HOT COUTURE fashion show. Last year and running into this year they performed at the Vieux Fort Street Theatre, Arts, and Cultural Exposé, Caribbean YouthFest, Vieux Fort Assou Square, and are expected to perform at Vieux Fort’s St. Lucia Independence celebrations.

The nominees for the first Jako Prize were introduced by a video presentation highlighting their work and accomplishments.

The 2nd edition of the Vieux Fort Nobel Laureate literary Night culminated with the Mayor of Vieux Fort presenting the Jako Prize, which entailed a cash prize of $500 and a glass trophy inscripted with the logo of Jako Productions and the following: 2017 / Jako Prize / Awarded to / Sherwinn Brice / for / 3D Album. Sherwinn, who is on tour overseas, wasn’t on hand to receive the prize, so fellow artist, Mc. Allister Hunt, who performed earlier in the evening, received the prize on his behalf.

Few would disagree that as a songster, songwriter, and producer, Sherwinn Brice is well disserved of the inaugural Jako Prize. His irresistible and accessible music and his compelling videos, among the best the island has produced, have made him a household name. As a Vieux Fort and St. Lucian artist, Sherwinn is breaking new ground as he embarks on taking his catchy brand of pop reggae, often compared to the likes of Bruno Mars and Wyclef Jean, to the world. His soon to be released 3D album, that features such Caribbean hits as Guilty, should go a long way to paving his path to international success.

For his part, Dr. Anderson Reynolds, managing director of Jako Productions, has often lamented that even when with almost no nurturing and institutional support an artist miraculously emerges on the St. Lucian scene, full of talent and promise, seemingly as good as or better than what obtains internationally, the artist doesn’t get very far in fulfilling their promise because the structure to take them further is not in place.

So after a few years of excitement little is heard of the artist. Therefore, with Jako Production’s stated mission of encouraging the artistic expression of St. Lucian culture and promoting that culture worldwide, Dr. Reynolds views the establishment of the Jako Prize as another means of supporting and encouraging St. Lucian artists and promoting and advancing St. Lucian culture.

Said Minister Belrose: “It is about making that commitment to changing the way things are in our society. Saint Lucia belongs to all of us and this is our time to show that we are patriotic Saint Lucians and we are part of the celebrations that are going on.”

Other activities include the Prime Minister’s Independence Ball in aid of the Upton Girls Garden Centre and several other events organized by various associations including the annual Independence Island Ride and Drive.

The theme for this year’s Independence is “I Am Saint Lucia” and the full schedule of activities is available www.govt.lc.

thumbnail_unnamedPRESS RELEASE – “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country. Ask what you can do for yourself as well.

It is both sad and ironic that in a time of steady and fervent patriotism we seem to care so little for our nation and the City of Castries”.

The pronouncement by His Lordship Mayor Peterson D. Francis comes after an alleged robbery on a cruise ship visitor over the weekend.

“We really need to reflect deeply and with purpose. Our 38th Anniversary of Independence is about all of us notwithstanding our party colours and differences in religious belief. It is about all of us demonstrating a sense of patriotic attachment to our national flag. Let me remind you that, a demonstration of patriotic attachment to our national symbol is not limited to flying our national flag at our homes, on our vehicles or in our business places, it is indeed much more profound than that”, said Mayor Francis.

“We cannot expect City Police Officers to be in every nook and cranny of Castries and as a result we require partnership with members of the public in curbing those incidents. The alleged robbery could have been stopped by anyone. I can assure you that someone saw what was taking place. The corrective measure to this situation starts with us. It starts with a sense of pride in country. A sense of patriotism.”

Mayor Francis also noted that nationalism necessitates St. Lucians joining hands and committing themselves to pursuing a singular national goal. He described this year’s Independence theme, “I am Saint Lucia” as ‘appropriate.’

“Our theme for this year’s celebrations could not have been more appropriate, strengthening our commitment to nation building. We should now pledge to assist City Police Officers with their mandate. It will require a change in our collective consciousness as a people. Get active and do something now. Be authentically patriotic,” he adds.

dsc_6339CARIBBEAN360 – Caribbean economies are projected to record minimal growth – an average of 1.7 per cent this year.

But’s that not enough to generate jobs and drive desperately needed debt reduction, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) has warned.

At the CDB’s annual news conference detailing the economic performance and outlook for its borrowing member countries (BMCs), president Dr Warren Smith cautioned that growth rates were way too low and public debts were still spiraling out of control.

Describing the overall performance as “fragile and uneven”, Smith raised concern that regional fiscal performance is caught in a vicious cycle.

“The big challenge for each and every one of us, then, is to reverse this pattern and place the BMCs firmly on a path of sustained and inclusive income growth with discernible improvements in living standards,” he said.

According to the bank’s Director of Economics Dr Justin Ram, service-oriented economies led economic growth last year, while commodity exporters, except Guyana, contracted.
